The use of statistical moment value as index for bearing failure diagnosis is prevalent when fault in its incipient stage. Assuming the defect-free signal as pure white noise, multitude of moment orders can be used to differentiate the white noise from signal containing defect information. This paper examines whether any specific moment order can outperform the others in general, as claimed in some state of art reports. The exact statistical distribution of a signal mixed with white noise is obtained in this paper, and we utilize this exact distribution to derive the exact moment with the aim of finding an optimal moment order. Simulation studies are conducted to verify the methods and compare the performance of different orders.
